The National Rugby League (NRL) Telstra Premiership is the top league of professional rugby league football clubs in Australasia. The competition is contested by sixteen teams, fifteen of which are based in Australia with one based in New Zealand. It is the Southern Hemisphere's elite rugby league championship and among the most attended rugby league competitions in the world.

The NRL Grand Final is one of Australasia's major sporting events, typically attracting large attendances and high television ratings. The game itself is usually preceded by an opening ceremony featuring entertainment from well-known musicians from Australia and around the world. The Prime Minister of Australia is often present at the game and involved in the presentation of the trophy to the winning team. In 1998 the Grand Final was held at the Sydney Football Stadium. Since then, it has been contested at  ANZ stadium in Sydney's Olympic Park, which was the primary athletics venue for the 2000 Olympic Games.
